I have some teak that has weathered and gone gray but only in places on varnished boards that are exposed to the outdoor elements.
I thought I might scrape down the gray spots and then try some aniline stains to match the colour of the unaffected areas.
I’m not sure of the procedure. It will be coated with varnish.
I’m not even sure it is teak. It might be Mahogany but since the bare spots are gray I’m leaning towards teak. I will probably be able to determine better once I scrape down to fresh wood.
Should I try some oxalic acid first?
If I can get the aniline stain to match do I simply start varnishing over it?
Will it fade in time?
Are there any other precautions or procedures I should be aware of or follow?
Thank you for your help

I don't think analine dye is the way to go. For one thing it degrades under ultraviolet and wouldn't last long in an outdoor application. For another just using it in spots like you've described would more than likely leave obvious borders.
My suggestion would be to strip the existing finish completely off and sand the wood down to get rid of the grey areas. The weathered spots are probably not very deep into the wood.
