Hello: My son and DIL just went out and bought two chests of drawers from an unfinished furniture store. I would have built them but it takes me forever to get larger projects done. My question is what is the best surface treatment for Alder? They will pick a color but I’d like to know weather to go with gel stain or wood conditioner or Danish oil to start with. Another question I have is what to do to the drawer boxes, which are solid wood: a light sealer coat?
Thanks, KDM

Kenneth,
There is no one best treatment. If they are putting on the color I would suggest the wood conditioner first and then their stain, This will give you a more controlled color.
Concerning the drawers, I seal drawers with shellac. There are many opinions on the subject, pro and con, whether this is " right or wrong." It's really just a matter of personal choice.
