For thinning shellac-what is the safest solvent? From reading the archives, ethanol appears to be the least toxic, however it is not available to the public, unless you want purchase Vodka or E85 neither of which is “pure” enthanol. Denatured alcohols intentionally contain toxic substances such as methanol and “methyl this/that”.
What do you use and/or recommend for thinning shellac?
Adequate ventillation is important, but is an organic charcoal filter mask important?
Thank you.

Denatured alcohol is what you use. It is ethanol with a small amount of an adulterant such as methanol to render it poisonous and undrinkable. This way you're not paying a liquor tax on it.
A mask is always a good idea for the sake of safety. Good ventilation is a must. Also, make sure you close your container of alcohol, especially in humid weather, as it will absorb moisture from the air.
