I am building my son a desk for his room. We were shopping for 3/4″ laminated wood and found a 4′ x 8′ sheet of Agathis ply. The graining looked very interesting.
Does anyone know anything about this wood. Google seems to indicate it is used for musical instruments. Can you purchase laminates or various sizes? Will it take a stain?
I will continue my looking on Google and also call my local wood store.
thanks

Hello bandit9497,
Agathis Australis is what we use in New Zealand a lot and very good to work with.
I am working on a bed in Kauri (agathis autralis) and always love this timber for timber glow when i oil it.
The timber is softish easy to plane and work, can shrink/expand a lot depending if it is swamp or recovered timber, swamp is the worst.
Depending what it is i like to sand up to 350 grit and oil, but when it is a high class piece i go to 1200 grit and than it is like a 3 d picture.
When you want to know more let me know.
Cheerio Bernhard.
Despite quite a bit of looking, I cannot find a source in the US for this wood. Only one company has any wood at all and it is in 8/4 stock boards.
It looks very interesting to work with, so I would like to know anything else you could tell me about it.
Is it readily available in N.Z. and, if so, by whom?
