I’ve built a playroom table and chairs set for the grandkids and I’ve found a nice piece of laminate for the table top. The project has turned out well, but I need to finish, border, legs, aprons, chairs and so on. The family wants a bright red colour. Materials are douglas fir and balsam fir. I don’t particularly want to showcase the wood, but want something attractive and tough to cover it. Have been thinking about latex enamel paint but would very much appreciate advice, comments or suggestions about this plan before going on. Fred

You do not want a paint called latex -- according to Jeff Jewitt, you want to avoid paints whose ingredients include vinyl, vinyl latex, or acyrlic styrene. These paints are made for painting walls. If you need to use a waterborne paint, choose a top of the line trim enamel that markets itself as 100% acyrlic. My personal preference would be for a top of the line oil based enamel, which will withstand strong cleaning products to a greater degree.
Another alternative is milk paint, which can be top coated to give a brighter look and higher sheen.
