About to purchase a new surface planer
Hey everyone. I’m still new to the woodworking circle, and I’m about to expand power tool arsenal with a new surface planer. I don’t have a large budget, so I’m looking at the bench top planers in the $400 price range. There are several brands out there to choose from, Craftsman, Delta, Dewalt, just to name a few. Was wondering if any of these brands stand out above the others, or if anyone has any other valuable info that may help me with this decision.
Thanks everyone!
Jeff

I have use several different brands of surface planers.. 12 to 13 inch only.. All worked well for me.. AND all worked BAD for me on certain woods.. I think not the planner.. Just the wood.. Maybe a spiral cutter? I never used..
If I had to do over I think the D-walters is the best in the price range but NOT a whole lot better...
Check out grizzly- They are having a 15" planer blowout- 15 inch planer w/ 2 HP induction moter for 575. a lot more "heavy duty" than a portable benchtopper. Just my .02.
where did you see that price for the grizzly planer?..thanks
I have the DW 735 and after they worked out some design problems (broken sprockets on the feed) it is fine today. A lot of planers will do the job but if you have a local supplier check out the features; I really like the machine's features such as built -in chip extraction (put a hose in a garbage can to collect chips). Since going through 3 machines in the early days (about 1 1/2 years ago) of its introduction, mine has worked great ever since.
Hi,
I own the Dewalt and the Rigid 13" benchtop planers. To my surprise, the Rigid has far exceeded the Dewalt. Even though the Rigid is the older of the two, I've had to have the Dewalt serviced more.
The rigid seems to have more power, cut deeper when I need it to, and still yield a nice fine cut for the finished pass.
Good luck!
