The second one looks a tad more difficult.

Good links, wonder what woods they were made of?
And if the wood fairy will drops off a few lifts of hardwood I'll whip up the second one in a weekend?
Yeah. It has those hard locks.
Uh,, Yah.
I think the first one might be a little more to my abilities. Tell you what - if you would deliver the second one to my door, for a couple bucks, I could use it for a pattern. Might even sneak it into the house.
Will,
Nice ones !
The second one I am going to leave to your expertise to build. I am just getting the hang of making stuff flat or straight. Some times both at once ! The first one reminded me of a similar living room cabinet in diguise. This is from an old book I have called Complete Book of Home Workshops by David X. Manners from Popular Science Harper & Row
PS: the book has plans if any of you would like me to mail you a copy : )

Chinese style Tool Box.. I love it!
Not for a tool box but I have made a Chinese style (tapered) chest like that. Or maybe the picture makes it look tapered. Mine had a straight back with the face and sides tapered. Modeled on a picture I found on the Web. Not as easy to make as it looks especially with well fitting miters. Fun project though.
I cheated and had a PRO do the Red Lacquer finish. By a PRO I mean a friend that paints autos. His finishes look like mirrors!

I could do it without the carvings.. And all the cracks in the wood in one year,,,,

will,
round about 1976 my room mate's mother dropped off a version of #2 in our living room. she did not have room for it among her huge antique collection. i never warmed up to that style although i appreciate the workmanship. would much rather live with a room full of the #1 themed stuff.
