Derek, just a note of feedback concerning the comment on the block plane making a small smoother. I recently purchased one of Ron Brees' planes and thought to myself that the small smoother was almost like a block plane.
Your advice on manual adjustment is right on. It is much easier than most people think. A very light touch with the hammer is all that is needed. I started out trying to drive the iron instead of lightly tapping it.
Thanks for posting.

Thanks Steve.
I know which plane of Ron's to which you are referrng. I hope to start mine this weekend.
For reference, with a smoother-block plane in mind, I shall also be shortly reviewing the HNT Gordon Palm Smoother and the Mujinfang Mini Smoother. These are both 3 1/2" long smoothers, but I thought that I would include them in this category because they are so good with one-handed trimming.

Derek, just an FYI...
I have asked Ron Brees to build a true block plane. He has not committed but I am looking forward to it if he does.
Best regards, Steve
