A bow arm Morris chair for the 21st century
Finished with all woodwork and ready for the finishing supplies I just ordered from Homestead Finishing, I think it is time to consider a more updated design. This pair is per the AFD plan for the Stickley-type classic.
Stickley has one called Metro, and AFD has a plan for a version of the Metro called California West Bow Arm. AFD is American Furniture Design, and they did the plan I used to build my Stickley-type chairs.
So I took the AFD drawing for the Stickley-type, made a Sketchup 3D model of same, then went to work to modify the features to include all the best curves and angles of the new Metro and California type designs.
Then I got real interested in Festool Domino joinery, and redid the model to include all domino joinery, and no mortise and tenons.
I don’t own a Domino tool, and don’t want to consider one now, because I am just a hobbyist and could not make one pay, but I want to refine the design to be eminently buildable. I think doing this chair using the Domino would be a rip as compared to doing the thing with mortises and tenons.
If you are a Domino addict, and a furniture builder, join in the discussion. It will be about how many dominos of what size to use where, and where to use size 1 mortises (no clearance at sides) and where to use the wiggle room 2 and 3 slot sizes.
The model is up on the 3D Warehouse under “California Bow Arm Morris Chair.”
