I have an older 6″ Toolkraft jointer that is leaving marks on wood. They appear to be random scratches or slight tear out marks. The blades have been sharpened and put back in flush with the outfeed table and it is still doing it. The marks appear to be more noticable in soft wood like pine and less in harder wood. I am at a loss! Any help would be great!

That is odd! All I can suggest is try all new blades? I am wondering if the blades you have even though you have reground and/or sharpened may have warped. It is rare in high tempered steel but I have heard of it happening. Just a couple thoughts but you have me puzzled as well.

I'm not quite visualizing these marks so I'll ask a few questions
Do these marks run with the grain? Do they extend the full length of the board? If you don't shift the fence are they located in the same spot on the board? Are they raised or indented? Do they relate to grain features like small knots?
The marks are random and do not run the length of the board, maybe only a 1/4" to 1/2" in length and scattered throughout the board. They do follow the grain, and are raised, now that you mentioned it. There are some very small scratches along the grain as well. The marks have nothing to do with knots, in fact I was running clear pine through the jointer. The jointer is old and the fence does not move, it is fixed to hinges. Oh, it seems to do it mostly on the face of the board not the sides, if that helps. Thanks!

Sounds like dull blades to me -- "hammering" instead of cutting cleanly.Mike HennessyPittsburgh, PAEverything fits, until you put glue on it.
It sounds like a blade issue to me as well. Perhaps you are taking too deep of a cut. Resharpen your blades, and try taking a lesser cut. Also, check that you are grinding the knives equally, and the cutting edge is straight and true.

Thank you, I'll try that.
Loosen one of the blades, slide it left or right .0625, make sure the move doesn't interfere with the housing (on either side) retighten and try again.
If the blades are making a mark this will eliminate it (but you should remove them and resharpen.
If the marks still appear, cehck the surface of the outfeed table... these are the only areas that could apply a mark which was not there before the wood passes over the blades.
Thanks alot I'll try that
You need dust collection. Even if you have dust collection unplug the jointer first. Then vacuum all the chips that are there. Look at the cutterhead, there probably are chips lodjed there, clean everything and then run a board thru. I believe this will solve your problem. It is not the blades if the problem is intermittent or the blemish is raised, not chipped out. This is a common problem if you do not use dust collection, or as I have ,not every time using the jointer.

Being new to the world of jointers I do not know a lot about them. But What you said makes sense. That describes the problem. It is as if some of the material being ejected is making its way back up into the blades causing the blemishes on the wood. I'll defenitaly try dust collection! Thanks!
You are using a jointer without dust collection? I hope you have a big broom!
But seriously, every once in a while my jointer gets clogged. I don't know why. Oh wait, yes I do, it's because I start the dust collector and forget to open the blast gate. But I noticed that once the chips back up, I get some funky looking grooves on the wood. Oops.
Good reply! I have experienced the same...
