Hmm, derek, I could have lots of ideas on that period. British Utility comes to mind-- in that time the British government , without getting complicated, set up a body that rather dictated what could be made, and what couldn't, and it was all done on the cheap. Materials were subject to controls, so furniture was made with what was available rather then what might have been ideal.
A rich source for quite inspirational designs within a strict budget and limited materials. Oak, dark stain, plywood, blockboard, varnish, simplified construction, etc., are all features of the style-- and I rather like it. Try a Google search using 'British utility furniture' as the title. I haven't looked there because I know the subject inside out anyway, but you might pick up a useful seam of inspiration. Slainte.

Richard, you're back, cool!!! What're you doin' to make your post-paragraphs stretch over to my north wall anyway? Maybe move that "Website" link in a bit??
I like the 1940's furniture in the States too. Don't know that we have a name for it though. Will have to think on that one for awhile.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)

I think it's just Richard bein' his usual ornery self! OK, I'm back from my "surprise" trip, so going to look for some links that actually relate to this thread, LOL!

None of the above, Sarge and FG. I just type in the wee window put up by Prospero and post. I noticed though that whilst I was lurking in Knots from friends computers in the UK that my posts spread very wide requiring scrolling left and right to read all the message. I have no idea why my posts are so reader unfriendly, and if someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong, I'd be glad to hear of a remedy.
I don't mean to hijack a thread here, but I do understand the irritation my 'wide' postings are causing. They certainly pish me off because I feel everyone needs to be able to read my pearls of wisdom easily, ha, ha--- ha, ha, ha-- ha, ha, ha, bloody har, har. I do have my IE 5.5 set up to override website settings-- might that be it? Slainte. Website
I wonder if I've found the problem? I had the word "Website" set to appear at the far right of my posts, with lots of spaces HTML'd in. I've just reset it to appear at the left. Maybe that fixed it? FG or Sarge, or anyone else, do let me know. This post looks fine on my my monitor. Slainte.<p href="http://r-gjones.laof.home.att.net/" Website

Yes indeed... I noticed over in the Sharpening thread that you were out of bounds also. It took me awhile to read it. BG posted back and then you posted again in-bounds. You must have made the adjustment just before you last post there.
Looking good an much easier to read....

In my earlier post, I alluded to "Website" possibly being the culprit. That link used to be to the left when you posted. Now that you've put it back there, everything is hunky-dorey.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
