In my bi-weekly browse of Barnes and Noble Bookstore last week, I picked up a new book 400 Wood Boxes: The Fine Art of Containment & Concealment. Exceptional photography, very broad spectrum of styles and woodworking techniques, incredible artistry and many flights of fantasy. There were about 180 different contributing artists, and the boxes were selected by Tony Lydgate.
Just wanted to let y’all know. Published by Lark Books, ISBN 1-57990-459-9, $24.95 SRP.

FG,
Thanks for the heads-up! Sounds like it could be a worthwhile addition to any boxmaker's library.

Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right.

I infer from the title that this book includes stuff about hidden compartments and the like. Is that so? Are they real usable, practical designs, or more like show pieces? Thanks for the review.
Hi Stan! Virtually all of the boxes are useful to one degree or another. What varies a great deal is the degree of imagination that was turned loose in the design. They vary from basic-and-functional to simple-and-elegant to quite sophisticated to wildly imaginative. There are small boxes, large boxes, boxes on stands, a couple of small trunks. Many jewelry boxes, a folding tool chest, on and on ......
Note that this is not a "how-to" book and it does not include any info (other than the picture) on the actual construction of the boxes. I bought it for inspiration and to jump-start my brain.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Us poor boys prefer to shop at places like half price books. I got Greene & Greene Masterworks for $34.95 and it listed originally for $75.00. It was in new condition. Half price books may be a Texas only store, but it saves me money. I drive from the middle of nowhere to Fort Worth a couple of times a year to get my vittles.
I take the money saved from buying paperbacks for 50 cents and put it toward beauties like the "400 Boxes" book. You aren't likely to find this one at half-priced books anytime in the near future. The fact that they were able to produce ~340 pages of color photos on such nice stock is pretty amazing. forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Well, I just check at Amazon to see if there were pics I could show you. They have 3 copies in stock as of now, priced at ~$17.00. If you need anything else from Amazon (to get to $25) you can get it cheap there!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
