Hi,
I have a bid due Monday Oct 19 for some 1820 vintage tables. The specs for the bases:
base of table to be 3″ solid pine or spruce free from defects, hand planed or bawn sawn surface only; no circular saw marks or machine planing.
I’m having a hard time finding a source-I’m in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
I have found some in Toronto but it’s only 2-3/4″.
I need 250 board feet of 3-1/2 x 3-1/2 x 6′ white pine. By the time I pay shipping, the pine from Toronto will cost 7.60/bd.’
Do you have a better source and price?
This is a sweet RFQ- 12 3′ x 6′ 1820 vintage tables…given the economy,I’d like to be competitive on my bid…
Thanks for your help!

If pine trees grow locally, you should be able to find a mill in your area that will cut what you need very inexpensively. With luck they already have some cut and drying.
The spec "hand planed or band sawn" is a bit strange, the two surfaces are very different looking, suggests the client isn't too knowledgeable, a danger sign. If the tables could have painted legs, the top could still be clear finished, then lumber yard Douglas fir would be very inexpensive and readily available.

Hi John,I'm in white pine country-but the local mills cut 1" and 2" exclusively-4" isn't very popular, hard to dry, checks when drying...I know I could go to a sawmill in the village where I live and talk the sawyer into cutting up some 10 year old white pine beams ...then I would have to haul them to a different yard to be dried in a kiln for 30 days...it also would be hard to find pieces that aren't checked The other thing is they want 12 tables done for Christmas-when there budget year ends so I would be willing to pay the downtown price for dry and ready to rock and roll white pine. The tables are finished with tung oil...and the specs are what they perceive as 1820 accurate. I've done work for them before and there is some leeway once you win the bid...The local stuff takes too long...so I'm hoping to find a price for white pine stocked and dry, ready to ship, stateside no problem. Thanks, silver
> ...1820 accurate...
Not trying to be flippant, but doesn't this mean it is supposed to have checks? What 190 year-old, 3" thick piece o' lumber wouldn't have checks in it?
Just curious,/dev
the specs say no defects...1820 but made in 2009-would the original have checks? it was an outpost for the north west trading company so I doubt premium material was used. But now-with a mandate to recreate that era for visitors...the specs call for no defects...go figure...I didn't get this project...too high-but I included a high price for the pine in case I did get it.best regards, silver
A and M woods have 3" and 4", though you'd have to pay freight from Cambridge. You could give them a call about your specific needs -- they're very knowlegeable about furniture requirements. http://www.amwoodinc.com/pricelist.aspx?x=WUTitHcQkRgMee9B9F2aRQ%3d%3d

Thanks dude,I'll check it out...same dude from Breaktime?what are doing with the 1" white pine-12% sounds a bit high but a buck a board ' sounds good.I'll check it out...always looking for good sourcesthanks, silver
Thanks Jim...looks very promising...silver
Great link and bamm-right to 4" white pine...4 bucks for #2 and better-specs call for no defects so I'll have to order extra for culling...shipping from Toronto was 350. thanks for your help...back to the bid...great to have plan a and plan bcheers, silver
When you order from them you usually talk to the guy who's going to sort the wood out for you. If you let him know what you need he might be able to sort out something without too much culling needed. Worth a try.
Jim
Yep -worth a try...especially at 400/m for #2 common and better...clear is 1080/msounds good...thanks again...very good linksilver
I bought it for stock & a friend as the price was right & the moisture content was due to all the rain but the material is not needed till next spring
