Hi all,
There is a local auction in my neck of the woods that is listing an H B Smith 24″ planer with a 10hp motor circa 1930. I’m trying to find any information and potential value if possible.
Thanks for the help, Eric

For info, try the Old Woodworking Machines website at http://www.owwm.com
I have no idea of the value.

Go over to http://www.owwm.com and check. Most on this site have the mindset that if it's old it's junk. I assume they can't see past the Grizzly catalog.

A 10 hp motor? Man, you could plane off half an oak tree with that in one pass.
The power would be nice but I can't began to guess what the thing weighs.
I figure you'd measure it in number of tons, rounded to the nearest ton.
At 10 hp and 220 volts I'm figuring it draws about 35 amps.
It is a 3 phase but has the converter to single phase with it. I posted a similar message at owwm.com and someone responded by saying that it would weigh at least 1 ton.

All of this discussion about an old planer reminds me of trip to a backwoods shop I made over 20 years ago. My first wife's family knew I was into woodworking and liked visiting shops whenever I could get the chance. They lived in a small town and knew a very inventive guy that had a shop outside of town that they thought it would be fun for me to see. The area it was located in was economicly depressed with lots of abandon houses, store fronts and buildings. One of the building was a high school that had been shut up for several years if not decades. Everything in it had been stripped out except an old planer. This guy somehow got permission to take this planer home. Not sure how he moved it. It was huge, seems like 30 inches wide but maybe even 36. He told me the motor that was on it was some wierd 440 volt monster that weighted a ton. Being inventive and using whatever was available he decided to try and hook up and old VW bug motor to it. He set up the motor outside the shop and ran the drive shaft through the wall. He made it work but the engineering seemed way more trouble than it was worth. I laughed pretty hard when he fired up the motor and then went inside to plane down a large stack of red oak!
