I’d very much appreciate advice about the comparative virtues/failings of two 16″x 42″ wood lathes: the Jet 708359 and the Delta steel bed lathe-1.5 hp model. They seem almost identical in specifications–but there must be some pluses for each that users could share. Many thanks,

Mac, I don't have any knowledge of either, but if you are planning to turn anything over 12" or near that 16", you will be a lot happier with at least 3 Hp.
You might also post your question at http://www.woodturners.org or maybe .com .
Mac;
I have the Delta 16x42 - 1 1/2 hp. The power is fine for 15" work. The biggest advantage I saw was the hollow legs can be filled with sand or concrete. I used concrete, so now if I put a large hunk of green wood on the lathe, spin it,and the lathe the does not move at all. I know you can add a shelf, with bags of concrete, to the Jet, but mostly that a dust and chip collector.
Good luck'

Mac--
I purchased the delta about a year ago, and have been very happy with it, but for the same $, I think you can get the x5 lathe, which is the same as the steelbed, but with a 2hp motor and a 5 yr warrantee. It is 220v though...
Nothing against Jet, but their lathe looks to be a clone of the powermatic(they are owned by the same comopany), in which case, I think I would spend the xtra$ to get the powermatic.
Good luck,
Peter
