I am in the market for a good 15″ planer. I just gave my father in law my 12″ Dewalt for his shop and I would like a bigger machine. I don’t think I can get a 20″ down the stairs to my shop in the basement.
I have not seen any reviews on the bigger machines just the benchtops. Doing a search on Knot’s did not come up with anything either.
Any suggestions and or reviews I might have missed?
Of the tools I have seen I don’t like the ones with the motor mounted on the top. It makes passing the board back to the start much more difficult. I don’t understand why they don’t put them on the bottom out of the way.
thanks for your help. I enjoy this website. Chris.

I upgraded to a 15" jet about a year ago and would highly recommend one to anyone. Came in tuned just fine. Knives are pretty easy to change. Also it has locking casters which are handy if you ever have to move it. Also powermatic is basically the same tool same price, just painted a different color. Tool Crib delivered it fedex no charge for freight, however your still gonna have some fun getting it into your basement. James
Some second hand info. My buddy has the Powermatic 15" planer, part # 1791209, which he purchased not quite two years ago. There is nothing bad to report about it. Solid machine, accurate and powerful. If I had the money (and space), I'd get one, too.
If there was such thing as a removal indicator gauge, a la the DeWalt's, that approximates how much bite is being taken, that would be the only thing I wish was on a 15" planer. Otherwise, I suppose just getting aquainted with its workings solves that issue.
Cheers,
Seth
thanks for the messages, I had it narrowed down between the Jet, Powermatic, & Woodmaster. Other than paint and price, I need to see the real differences between Jet and Powermatic.
I have some literature on the Woodmaster. My local wood supplier has one he uses and seems like a solid machine.
Have you looked at Grizzly? ................ seems likea better bang for your $.
