Now that I am retired, I am getting back to serious woodworking. I went to the local hardware store to purchase several new carbide 12″ saw blades. My Craftsman tablesaw, 30+ years old, has a 5/8″ arbor. All I could find at the stores were 1″ arbor 12″ blades. Are 12″ blades with 5/8″ arbors still made, are there inserts to adapt the new blades to 5/8″, are they safe? In the “good old days” blades came with 5/8″ arbors and a center knockout to convert them to 1″. Thanks.

There are a few 12" X 5/8" tablesaw blades available off the shelf, Forrest makes a couple, all that I know of are pricey so if you are looking for a less expensive alternative maybe you should consider using a 10" blade.
There are 1" to 5/8" spacers...Freud for one sells them.
Forrest still has some 12" blades with a 5/8" bore...Amazon had them on sale just a few weeks ago at a huge discount...you might check Ebay for any resellers of those, or maybe someone here grabbed a couple of extras and has one they'd sell reasonably cheap.
I didn't think that Craftsman made a 12 inch saw only thirty years ago and it seems odd that it would have such a small arbor. Can you post the saw's model number?
In any case Forrest will supply you with a saw with any diameter arbor hole you want at no extra charge.
Unless you absolutely need the extra diameter you can use 10 inch blades, they'll cost considerably less, you'll have many more blade styles to choose from, and the saw will cut better and more accurately with a ten inch blade.

JDavid,
1" is the standard bore for 12" and larger blades in the US these days even though 12" saws with 5/8" arbors are still being made. The required bushing for 1" to 5/8" is our most popular BL71MCE9.

WOW! What a response. I am new to this board and greatly appreciate the terrific ideas posted to my question. The 10" blade idea is one I will definitely take to heart. Also the Freud bushing will get me over the 12" hump. From here I am going to Amazon to see if the blades mentioned are still on sale. Thank you one and all!
