Two band saws. A powerful one for milling big timbers and another for detail work.
Bathroom with shower. Paintings are of me done by my mother over many years.
Drafting station for referring to plans.
Planking bench. Boat planks are clamped in knee vise and worked. Can hold 50 plank.
Lofting floor. When drawing and moulds are complete, plywood is taken up and boat is built on car-decking floor.

Shop Specs

  • Location: Seattle, Washington, USofA
  • Size: 1800sq. ft.
  • Type: Detached
  • Focus: General
  • Heating/Cooling: no cooling yet. Electric heat. Probably just put in a vent fan for summer.

Here are some photos of my newly completed boat shop. It took 3 years to get the city to permit due to liquification zone issues (earthquakes). But I am now operational. The shop is primarily built to build a 30' wooden schooner. The big white floor is painted plywood temporarily placed over car decking over concrete. The plywood is used to loft (draw out) the boat full size in order to make patterns. The jointer, planer and primary band saw are set mid shop so I can run 25' timbers thru. The dimensions are roughly 32x55, 16' ceiling height. Electric heat, fully insulated, 12x14 door, 24" thick foundation w/14,000 lbs of rebar (again... liquification zone). I also put in a bathroom with shower. The walls of bath are portraits of me done by my mother (family humour). One band saw is for milling and one is for detail work. One bench is for basic work and one bench is a planking bench (with associated chisels, knee vise, etc).

I hope you will post a lot of pics as the boat progresses, including drawings and templates and if I might be so bold as request an invite to visit during the build that would be as cool as it gets. Thanks for posting.
