I saw this design in one of the Fine Woodworking turning books. Must have been Richard Raffan. It was too fun to pass up.

It's made from a small chunck of hard maple and finished with a roughed-up walnut stain to give it an old-timey look.

MBerger writes: Blackwill: Start with a mini lathe (sometimes called midilathe). They can handle most hobby projects, at least when you're starting out.
