Bottom joined by blind rabbets on all edges.

I've made several of these. A pair makes a nice wedding gift. The original is in the American Museum in Britain, Bath, England. I first saw it in John Kassay's "Book of Shaker Furniture." Made of 1/4" quartersawn cherry. It's darkened by exposure to direct sunlight, then finished with a mixture of tung oil, boiled linseed and varnish, hand rubbed in several coats with 0000 steel wool. Bottom is joined by blind rabbets all around. Back and sides meet with simple butt joint, requiring a gluing jig to keep things from sliding on the angle when pressure is applied.
