A Shaker Oval Box - The Box Bend, Stage 1comments (2) June 9th, 2014 in blogs
The following video shows my process of creating the first stage of making a #5 Shaker Oval Box. I tried various Warehouse plug-ins for bending components. However, I was not satisfied with the results. So this method creates an overlapped bending of the box band using the Intersect function.
Here is the final result, but includes only the Box Banding bend. There is more to do, but that will be later.
My resources for building the Shaker Box are mainly two documents including:

- "Shop Drawings of Shaker Furniture and Woodenware", Volume 1, by Ejner Handberg
My first step was to import a page from Handberg's book, make full-size, and traceover the shapes both the Box Band and the Cover Band.
The next step was to create the Box Band and Cover Band components using the finger joint templates.
The elipse shape is made using the Circle Tool, then Scaling up to make the long axis. It's handy to have precise guidelines for elongating the circle to the exact long axis dimension.
To create the overlap area of the bent banding (about 5-in. long), I placed arcs to represent the thinning of the end section of the band, and the overlapping of the fingers.
I used the finger template to create the overlapped joinery in the bent banding by applying the Intersect funciton of SketchUp.
After the Intersection, there is considerable clean-up of the waste. But this is facilitated by positioning the box in a top view with parallel projection. Then with a right-to-left selection, most of the waste is removed quickly.
This is only stage 1 of making this box. I will show the remaining procedures in later videos.
