In our 2009 Tools and Shops issue, Roland Johnson reviews the riving-knife systems on eight tablesaws. The knives are an effective tablesaw safety feature that are just starting to come to the United States after being available on European machines for years.

In this video tie-in to the article, Johnson explains how kickback can happen on the tablesaw and actually incites it in a controlled environment, using Styrofoam for demonstration purposes (don't try this at home). Then he shows how a riving knife can reduce the threat.
