A Lesson in Grain Direction
A College of the Redwoods instructor shares some important insights into reading grain direction when making a curved footJim Budlong, a graduate of the College of the Redwoods Fine Woodworking Program and a longstanding instructor at the school, recently shared one of his lectures for students: How to read the grain direction for a carved or bandsawn leg, so that the grain follows the curves you’ve made. In this video, you’ll see him demonstrate examples both good and bad.

I have never thought this through in this much detail. Wow!
And, by the way, thank you!
Very informative, thank you.
Super-super great information! Keep up the great work!
Very informative! I enjoyed it beginning to end. I would think, structually, there would be a lot to be gained with this grain direction approach.
Simply magical!
great info, and just in time! Working on chairs. I didn't know about pointing the angle of the grain toward the center, thank you!
Great info! I made a couple of things where I noticed this and wondered how to have a better grain look. However to do this, I would have to get a board almost twice as large as the leg I need. I wonder if I can do this with face glued boards?
one of the best videos and instructions I have seen. Thanks so much for this information
Thanks for this very clear and helpful video!
