This was my first attempt at turning a segmented bowl. I attended a local guild meeting with a member of the Guild of NH Woodworkers. Claude Dupuis demostrated the process and I did some additional internet research. At SegmentedTurning.com I met the owner Bill Kandler. After purchasing his software package and one of the plans he had, I was off and running (or was it turning). After a couple of telphone calls to Bill for beginners help, I felt confident I could complete this project. Why not start with something smaller you might ask? Well this was going to be my nephew’s and his fiancee’s wedding gift in Germany. The final product has over 300 pieces of walnut, maple and cherry. It measures about 13″ diameter and about 8″ tall. The bowl was finished with 2 coats tung oil and Beall’s 3-step buffing process. I was so protective of the bowl that during the flight to Germany that no one dared get too close to my carryon bowl in a cardboard box.

Bosch GCM12SD Miter Saw
Bosch has produced another quality miter saw. It not only fits tight to the wall; it also has the shortest distance to the miter lock. The saw’s generous miter range is complemented by its large selection of miter detents. However, it falls short in a few areas. The handle is nicely ambidextrous, but its large size may make it cumbersome for all but large hands. I also found the miter and bevel controls, including their locks, stiff. The saw is the only model in the field with no light, either an LED or laser.
This tool is designed for convenience. The battery and pins are easy to load, and the safety lock operates with the same finger you use to pull the trigger. The depth of set is adjustable, there’s a work light, and there’s a hook for hanging the tool on your toolbelt. A gauge lets you keep track of when you’ll need to recharge.
The jig’s primary design feature is that the depth guide on the drill bit is set when you clamp material into the jig, so it is always right for the material thickness (from 1⁄2 in. to 1 1⁄2 in.). A color-coded system of screws tells you which screw length to use for each material thickness. A starter set of screws is included. The jig and screw system work as designed, with the exit holes well centered in material of varying thicknesses.
For the ultimate warmth, glow, and clarity, in a hard-wax oil, Adam Godet recommends Tried & True Original. To get there, however, you’ll need to buff it between coats.
With its graceful curves, cabriole legs, and ornamental back splat, a Queen Anne side chair is a bucket list build for many woodworkers. Dan Faia had a very specific Queen…
