Last year we wrote about Rockwell's innovative 3Rill, the first combination cordless drill, driver, and impact driver (see FWW #222, p. 18). That tool category is very appealing to woodworkers because it gives you everything you need to drill and drive screws in one compact package, helping you to cut down on the number of chargers and tools you need to store.

Now Festool is releasing its own combination drill, with the TI 15 Hybrid Impact/Drill Driver. Like other drills in the Festool family, this one looks to be loaded with convenient features and accessories.

--It has a brushless motor powered by a 14.4 volt lithium-ion battery.

--The drill features the versatile FastFix interchangeable chuck system, which allows you to switch out chucks without the need for tools. It works with the lightweight Centrotec chuck, which holds standard 1/4-inch hex shank bits, and the keyless chuck, both of which are standard with the drill. It also accepts Festool's accessory chucks, including the right-angle chuck, which can swivel a full 360 degrees with 16 locking positions; the eccentric chuck, which is offset so you can work in corners inside a cabinet without marring adjacent surfaces; and a depth stop chuck, which helps drive screws to a consistent setting.

--A handy LED light at the tip illuminates the work.

--It has onboard bit storage and a fuel gauge for the battery.

--A convenient belt clip can be used on either side of the drill, which should make both lefties and righties happy.

The TI 15 comes with a three year warranty that covers the tool, batteries, and charger. The complete kit, which includes the keyless and Centrotec chucks, two batteries, charger, and systainer, will sell for $525. For those who own one of Festool's C-Series or T-Series cordless drills, you can buy a "basic" kit that doesn't include the batteries and charger-you can use the batteries and charger you already have. The basic kit will cost $325.

The TI 15 will be available this October, and we'll certainly give it a test drive for the magazine's Tools & Materials department. For more information and a video of the drill in use, go to the Festool website.
