I’m refinishing a cedar chest. 3 types of wood were involved in the construction of this chest. the following are those woods, mahogany Veneer. cedar. and poplar. In taking off the finish and stain I found what looks like a grey base coat. Can anyone tell me what this might be and why. The chest was a dark mahogany color.
Thanks, Rick

It's a bit hard to say without actually seeing it. It may well be that the original finish was virtually a paint. Applying paint over grey colored primer helps it cover better (or at least with truer colors) than over primer tinted to the overcoat color.
