Hey all,
Anyone out here ever thin down minwax polyshade stain and varnish mix? I was thinking about thinning it down 3/1 like the wipe on varnishes.
Iv’e got a bunch of windows I trimmed out and I’m not looking forward to brushing on 2 or 3 coats of this stuff. Also, the wipeons I’ve used seems to dry faster being thinned down, in addition to looking better.

Hello, Dan,
I would not use minwax polyshades on any project worthy of my time. I have had little else than poor results at best, disasters at worst.
My two cents

Hello Dan,
the Sherwin Williams store in my town quit carring the polyshade several years ago because it had too many problems.
Guys,
Thanks for the heads up. I bought a qt. but haven't used it yet.
The trouble I'm having is I'm trying to match an old color that SW discontinued. The color on the can looked like a close match, but after brushing on 4 coats on a test peice, it wasn't even approaching the color. After that I tried some dark walnut stain then 2 coats of the poly. That was closer but not a match.
The problem is whatever I go with will have to be able to be repeatedly mixed for consistant results.
I re-cased this guys windows on one floor and I had to mill all the profiles myself and it had to be done in a short time, so I couldn't spray it. I don't look forward to brushing on 4 coats. After this job he wants new baseboard and crown. I'll be spraying those!
Anyway, what problems did you guys encounter?

Hello, Dan,
Sorry for not replying to your request earlier regarding minwax polyshades. My experience has been a very blotchy finish. I followed the directions to a tee with little success and I even spoke to minwax customer service to no avail. They suggested the product may have been inadvertantly frozen. I doubt that very much. Minwax prestain conditioner helped somewhat, but dark stains like Bombay Burgonday were hopelessly blotchy. I have tried stain and varnish mixes of my own brew with much better success, - I don't know why this minwax product has performed so poorly for me.
