A customer of mine recently painted his first cabinet with a ‘cabinet grade’ enamel. He doesn’t feel that it is shiny enough for his liking. Does anyone know if you can use a wipe on poly over this paint with no drawbacks? He doesn’t own a spray gun and I’m not all that knowledgable in the finish area to tell him yes or no. He is looking to reduce or eliminate brush marks.

Using an oilbased varnish or poly varnish over a paint is problematic. The varnish will add an amber tone and will yellow further over time.
If a good enamel was originally used, a varnish will not add much additional gloss.
*In order to eliminate brush marks on water-based poly, I had good success with very fine wet sanding followed by extra fine rubbing compound and a polisher. I followed this with wax and a good buffing, which did seem to shine it up a bit more.
*Roger, I'm curious; was this done over enamel paint?Dano
