I was buying some gunstock blanks from an old guy who used to have a portable saw mill. He had some 20 inch wide “California valley live oak” planks that had been air dried for years. They were nearly 1 1/8 thick and fairly flat. What is a good bf price for them?

Considering the size, they're probably Valley Oak. Valley Oak is the biggest oak in California. It is a white oak. In contrast, California's Live Oaks are red oaks. Looking carefully at the boards should tell whether they are red or white oak. The Live Oaks are smaller than Valley Oak, and the trunks are rarely straight, so they don't often produce wide long boards. The last time I bought rough-sawn dry Valley Oak from a sawyer, I paid around $4 a board foot.
