I am investigating the purchase of a mortiser. I like the idea of using the machine like the one described in FWW #98, on the other hand the small bench top models by Delta, Fisch, or Jet are attractive from a price perspective. Maybe even a Multico, although in that price range I am wondering if the Powermatic, or General floor models would be better. I tend to not lean toward Powermatic owing to the way they handled an issue with my Artisan table saw. I cannot seem to find vendor for the General machine, although I read a good review on it, only wish I could remember where. Any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated.
If I were to build a machine like the one in #98 where can one find mandrels?

The machine pictured in #98 is a stripped down version of a slot mortiser. There's a good article in a later issue (about 2 years ago I think) where a fellow made a nice version using drawer slides and a router. I believe the mandrel the article was using is a Mooradian from LA inCA. Chuck is supplied by you. You could also use a pair of pillow blocks and have a shaft threaded by a machine shop. Run it at 3,500 to 5,000 rpm and HSS 2 flute endmills are cheap and work well. See also Laguna and Rojek for ideas about slot mortisers
