it has been a few years since i was there but the thing seems to be that japanese products are very expensive in japan
the japanese will tell you to go to hongkong to get deals on japanese products its the way the system works
probally you can get what you are looking for in tokyo at the Ginza thats the busness area in tokyo
Tokyu Hands (not Tokyo!) department store in Shibuya district, about 3 blocks from the metro station. The tools section is up on the 3rd or 4th floor. I check it out every time I'm in Tokyo. Interesting selection of saws, chisels, planes, carving gouges, etc.

goto the japan woodworking forums and search for stu ablett. He is an American living in Tokyo and regularly posts on a number of other forums such as woodworking.com. He certainly should know where to buy tools etc.
This is his personal website. It is filled with great photos and videos of his activity:

I believe Stu is Canadian.
He had pics about going to someplace called "Joyful Honda" out in the suburbs. 'looked like a Japanese Home Depot.
Thanks to you all for the information!I will stay close to one Tokyu Hands so this will be an obvious choice,
I will also try to go to Kyoto to see the craftsmen.Cheers,
Eric
There is a store in Nihonbashi Honsho not far from the Nihonbashi stop on the GInza line if you are in that area. The concierge at your hotel should be able to pinpoint it specifically for you. They are usually extremely helpful and almost never give up until they find the answer. I have never found a selection that equals what is available from Japan Woodworker. By the way, if you get down to Kyoto, then go to Shimonzen-dori, where all of the old craftsmen work. Then you should be able to see some of the classic woodworkers; i.e.-holding the wood with their toes while sawing, etc.
Eric, try getting some help from your host, they will probably jump through hoops to help you. I picked up my stuff in the early 1980's in Kyoto, planes, saws and two magnificent large stainless steel squares. Paddy

Tokyu Hands is a chain and they are located all over Tokyo. There is a whole floor on each devoted to crafts and tools.
