At a close-out of a woodworking shop I bought a bowl blank labelled “Spot Wood.” It’s fairly hard and slightly oily, the color of Honduran mahogany with chocolate-colored blobs all through it. I can’t find a listing for it in any of the usual wood books. Does anyone know what its real name is?

I've seen what may be the same stuff, but called "Dalmatian wood." I don't know anything about it, other than that I believe it's from lowland rain forests in South America. I don't have a clue as to the botanical name.

can you post a pic? it would help to see it ,your description sounds like many palms I have supplied in the past (I use to have a do it yourself shop/at which we stocked many exotics.

So what is "spot wood"?
Have you heard of "spot oil prices" and "spot gas prices"? They are the prices paid for a shipment of oil in a given deal.
Maybe "Spot wood" refers to the price paid for a given sale of a large quantity of wood.
But then again, what do I know?
