Hi: I have read reference to Sam Maloof expertly carving his chair arms on the bandsaw and I am eager to start a run of 6 of his low back dining chairs. Before I begin I would like to know if anyone here knows what particular blade he used?
I have an older Powermatic 20″ saw. Thanks, Robert

Doesn't matter. Any medium skinny medium course blade will do.
Oooooh man
ooooh man oh man
be careful wid that
Even Maloof in his articles and videos says " I do this but I don't recommend anyone else to use the band saw like this. It can be quite dangerous".
I will go look it up but he used on the order of about a three eighths wide blade and about eight teeth per inch.
It is worth, if you don't already own it, getting a DVD showing him cutting out chair parts on the bandsaw (and table saw). I have the VHS equivalent of this DVD

I can not recommend highly enough this book as well it is really great with tons of interesting and useful info and another ton of photos of his work and him doing the work plus lots of drawings. Great drawings. He was an illustrator before he was a woodworker.

Seriously the tricky bit with a bandsaw is to get it to cut straight. Curves in general are much easier.
But to cut out parts the way he actually went about it . . .
be careful or better yet don't do it. The parts can easily be pulled from your grip and slammed on the table. He seemed to have just the right part of the board touching the table at all times so things worked out. I sure bet he had some scary things happen learning this technique though.
Maybe not. He sure thought out side the box when it came to doing woodworking HIS WAY. Maybe he was just so aware of what he was doing that it just happened right. Keep that in mind.
He is really going narrow blade here. The one issue I could not find in my library is issue #137 I think this is the article from it but listed as published (also) in the chair book.

I just spent a bunch of time looking through the VHS but he didn't say the blades he uses.
I know there is an article where he says he has four bandsaws. He might mention the blades there.
ALSO and this may be it
He was on an episode of The American Woodshop with Scott Philips

I did a quick look but doesn't seem to be a search option there.
Good luck. Post some photos please.
Thanks for your interest
Robert,
You are welcome. I hope some of that gets you closer to your worthy goal.
Two of my all time favorite topics to talk with someone about:
The bandsaw and
Sam Maloof
(not that I am any kind of an expert on either one but I sure enjoy them )
Hi Surfside, the price seems right on that link. Do you mind sharing which blades you buy and use? Thanks, Robert in Mendocino, Ca.
Thanks Bart, sorry for the delay, it took me a while to think of looking at the forum again. I will try a couple of blades from them.
band saw blades
Hi Bart: I've been too busy to look at the forum till now. I ordered 2 3/8ths by 10 tpi flex back blades and have not had occasion to put one on my saw yet. I am finishing a dust collection system by enclosing my cyclone in a sound reducing closet. I won't be needing the new blades till I begin on my Maloof copy low back dining chairs. I ordered a Makita angle grinder today for shaping the chairs and now that my very good dust collection is almost done I will probably elect to do the angle grinding and sanding outside!
SNAFU'd forum filtering
Boy, now I can see why people get fed up with this site's software. I just tried to submit a response to this thread, and got blocked by a spam filter. Let's see if this gets through.
Sam used a 3/8" blade
I know this is an old thread but I've been looking for this information as well and finally found it. In this video, Sam Maloof talks about what size bandsaw blade he uses:
