Hello Gary,
Thank you so much for applying your time and talents here. I have a question about a video episode that Andy Rae had: “Sharpening a Plane Iron: Honing the Edge Part Two: Use sharpening stones to flatten the back of the blade and hone the cutting edge”. In this episode, he utilizes a container that keeps his stones in the water and also provides a strong platform for honing files and other edges. Do you have any suggestions as to how I could build a set up like this? The frame seems to me should be made of untreated wood as the chemicals in the treated would may have an adverse effect on the stones. A strong frame that you can really put pressure on. My stones are in small blue plastic containers, but they always dry out.
Thank you in advance,

Hi Todd,
From the looks of the video, Andy has a fairly simple set-up. Now I'm guessing on this but it looks like he's got a Tupperware container with pretty flat sides. Inside that he's got two ledgers probably made of wood. These are just sitting there. Maybe there's a spacer down low in the bottom of the tub to keep them in place. Maybe they're glued in place. I don't know. Maybe they're aluminum plate, something that won't rust in the water. It's hard to say looking at the video. On top of these ledger strips, he places a stone holder. The stone holder has some thickness as well so it doesn't flex. Probably made of wood with two end strips to keep the stone from moving about. The stone into that holder and that's where he does his honing.
I hope this helps.
