Crossing over from Fine Homebuiding …
Customer wants me to make an ‘indoor pond’ / dining room accent piece. No sunlight exposure. Desires to be able to see the woodgrain, etc., IN THE WATER.
Is there a finish that can do this? Will shellac work? I’m talking about a glorified wood box, with some gravel on the bottom, and filled with water. LONG term water-proof. Complete immersion. Oh, yes – and fish too. Mainly goldfish, nothing exotic.
Any advice?

Fish Tank
Maybe build a pond out of the lumbers used for ship building. Than line the outside of the wood design with an acrylic basin glued together like you were making a fish tank. Finish on the wood won't help .

With the exception of a thick epoxy pour-on material, no finish is completely waterproof. All will allow water vapor to pass through. Once the water vapor passes through, it will cause the surrounding finish to fail.
Thanks for the replies .... I'll design something else. Like, say, a custom plexiglass tank with a really close-fit wood case.
I'll have to experiment a bit, see what I can do to let you really see the grain through the plexiglass.
Tank
Put the plexi on the outside of the wood
