I recently flattened my 4000 and 6000 grit water stones (King Brand) on 220 grit wet & dry paper but now they won’t generate a polished surface. As they once worked perfectly, I can only assume that some of the 220 grit from the wet & dry has become embedded in the softer surface of the water stones. Scrubbing in fresh water hasn’t fixed it.
Have you come across this before and have you any suggestions for fixing them?

I haven't run into this problem before and the technique you used to flatten your stones is a commonly recommended. Your thought, that the stones have become contaminated with grit from the paper, is plausible.
You can try a few things. For starters you can try working the two stones against each other, it might just work the contaminants loose. Another approach is to use coarse drywall sanding screen, the mesh in the screen allows loose grit to accumulate harmlessly instead of being pressed into the surface of the stones. A third, but more expensive, fix would be to clean up the stones on a diamond stone which doesn't generate loose grit.
