All,
I want to use up a half can of Watco Gloden Oak but it’s not quite dark enough for the look I want. I’m thinking of adding a few drops of Trans-tint dark brown…but I’m not sure the trans-tint will really mix with the watco…kinda like an oil and vinegar or oil and water thing. Has anyone done this? .or do you buy darker watco and go that way? thanks..
PS. the wood is oak

I just checked at Jeff's site and found this: "TransTints cannot be added to most of the “Danish” oils or finishes thinned with a high ratio of mineral spirits."
Here's the page: http://homesteadfinishing.com/htdocs/TransTint.htm The above quote is from the "Use as a Finish Toner" section. He gives instructions for mixing with other oils and oil-based varnishes.
I usually buy some dark walnut Watco to mix with the golden oak.

FG,
Thanks, I should have thought to check Jeff's site. I have a sample working now where I hit the oak with just the dye/water and then the watco golden oak...not sure I like it very much... with open pore woods I think its best to use alcohol in the dye rather than water.

Something along those same lines is what I often do too.

Kevin
