Some things I pick up just do not make sense despite being very useful. Does anyone know for what purpose the attached was intended, the measures are very accurate but why the two arms? Made in Japan as an advertising giveaway I suppose but for which particular trade?

Had to laugh, 'SNORK!'
A good friend of mine (Carpenter)knew I collected antique tools and refurbished them. While at a tool auction, Donald saw this unique looking plane and just had to buy it for me. When he presented it to me, I fell into a fit of laughing and guffawing.....'SNORK'!
I tried to explain to him, what his 'plane'really was, and that it wasn't even a wood working tool.
He became really peeved and insisted I was wrong, and that it was indeed a plane,
Rather than lose a good ole buddy, I said, I was only kidding, when I told him whatI thought it was,,,
The Brand name escapes me now (25 yrs later,)but I'm still in contact with Donald. I can't break his heart, but I use it in the summer to make.....
.... SNOW CONES 'snork'! Steinmetz.
Was it one of those big things that looks like a scraper but isn't?? I think I have one of those, ROFL!!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
That...or a plane made to shave ice. I forget what they were called, but they did make a plane for that.
Take care, Mike
Jamie, Brand name Gilchrist It's cast iron (Galvanized)(shaped like a boxy block plane) The top is flat and it is hinged at the top rear.
After 'planing'/shaving/scraping over the top of a huge block of ice, the ice particles/snow fill the interior of the brick shaped box by way of the throat. The street vender flips the lid and empties the snow into a cone shaped paper cup. With a deft motion he/she forms the heaping pile of crystals
into to a domed crown .On a hot summer day, to any kid, this is poetry in motion. One's salivary glands become aroused with anticipation of the cli... er, finale.(Or 'topping off') . That crowning glory,is much like a beautiful sunset or technicolored rainbow, as the vender drizzles on the flavor/flavors of your choice,
using one of about thirty glass soda pop bottles of exotic sugary syrupy flavors. As a final gesture, she inserts a thin straw.
The bottles are topped with those little hinged 'jiggers' used by bartenders. For what it's worth, my favorite is coconut . Steinmetz.Edited 8/6/2006 8:48 pm ET by SteinmetzEdited 8/6/2006 8:54 pm ET by Steinmetz

I recently aquiacquiredtrainge looking tool. I thought I could figure out it's purpose I photographed it from all angles and can upload the shots directly to my TV. BUT alas, can't recall how to upload it into this $#%^computer.
I,ll describe it..... All steel;about 6-1/2" long. At the rearward end is attached a steel ring about 3/4" around. Somewhat akin to a nut cracker.
It consists of two steel bars hinged at the forward end.
so the two legs (one shorter)can be opened (like a nut cracker)to insert ??
The two jaws have 3 sets of two each half circled holes that come together to form three sets of figure eight openings when the bars are closed. Also there is a keeper that slides toward the front and wedges the tapered legs to capture and hold three different sized ???
Methinks it't a wire drawing tool or a wire fence twister/puller
maybe a lineman's copper wire drawer- splicer. No name, no manufacturer. No Dice! Steinmetz.
Appears to be hand forged..
Sounds like one of those Bull catchers to me. You tie a rope on the ring and shove it you know where ! And then hang on for a ride.Work Safe, Count to 10 when your done for the day !!

NO! LMAO Those things have two balls to clamp into his nostrils Steinmetz.
Yep, we have a couple of those bull things. I love the ice shaver. Cool! Not what I have, though, much neater.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Geee. Have you never seen one of those "gag gift" bull catchers ?? It's a 3 foot long X 3/8" round steel arrow with a ring on the end.Work Safe, Count to 10 when your done for the day !!
