Dear John,
is it possible to convert an old single stage 2 hp dust collection impeller and motor to a cyclone format and thereby convert it to a 2 stage collector. I can do sheet metal and have access to those type of tools.

The best of the cyclones get their separating efficiency from careful design of the units dimensions, the diameter and slope of the cyclone's sides and the inlet and outlet diameters are critical as I understand it, so you'll need to get those worked out. The design of the impeller is also fine tuned for the application so a fan and motor from a single stage unit may not be quite as efficient but should be usable. Good luck if you try it.

Sid,
This morning I was researching dust collectors and found that Oneida has already done the hard work for you, they make a cyclone that can be attached to a blower salvaged from a single stage system: http://store.oneida-air.com/thedustpod.aspx
Note that the shape of the cyclone, and the connector to the can, are quite a bit different from their regular cyclones, as I said in my first reply, it takes some sophisticated engineering to get an efficient system.
Hope this helps, John W.
