Sometime within the last 10 years or so FWW had an article about “toxic woods”, mostly tropical hardwoods, that could cause allergic reactions. In particular, there is a wood that contains a compound similar to urushiol, the “universal irritant” found in poison ivy.
Does anyone recall what issue this article was in? I searched the on-line index and only found a reference to a 1977 issue. I could go downstairs and search my stash of back issues (since 1982) but it would take me all day because I would stop to read every issue.

Tamarack, I think the article you are referring to was "When Woods Fight Back." Can't remember the issue, but it was about ten years ago. If you can't find it, E-mail me and I'll send you a copy. Also, there was another good article on this subject in the International Wood Collectors Society (IWCS) monthly publication: World of Wood. It was in the March 2000 issue. I could send you a copy of it as well.
...But anyway, the most important commercial timber with similar chemistry to poison ivy is Silky-oak (AKA: lacewood, Gravillea robusta and the closely related Cardwellia sublimis, both are members of the Proteaceae family from Australia.) Poison ivy is in the Anacardiaceae family and some other members of this family also have the same or similar toxic chemistry.
*Tamarack, try this website:http://www.mendelu.cz/~horacek/toxic.htmor do a search on toxic woods. I believe there is a US Gov maybe U.S. Forrest Service site that list them and I think CAL OSHA has it also or maybe a link to the gov site.
*You might try Issue 114, Sept 1995.
*Search throught this site. Has gobs of info.http://bodd.cf.ac.uk/index.html
*Thanks Gentlemen! The article was indeed in the September/October 1995 issue (and I only read two or three other articles enroute to finding it). The wood I was thinking of is Goncalo Alves, which is in the same family as poison ivy. Because I have violent reactions to poison ivy, I'm going to steer clear of both Goncalo Alves and Lacewood.
