Hey there, guys and gals. I picked this little thing up at an antique store today. It was in with some other marking tools and squares. There are no marks/writings on it. It is about 3″ long and 2″ wide across the points. I searched all over the web, but nothing like it popped up.
It seems to be some sort of multi-function square, but not sure. It is completely made of steel. In the end, it may not be a tool at all. 🙂
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Josh

Looks like a whatchamacallit. If not, it has to be a thingamajig. Whatever you paid for it was a steal. They do not make them anymore:-)
ha ha :)I dropped a dollar for it. If anything, it will make an interesting paper weight. We came to Michigan from Tucson for a few weeks of vacation and spent today doing some good old-fashioned yardsaling. There are some many more tools available here than back home. I found a decent old Disston backsaw that I will clean up. It has been fun.Josh
That's what I thought.

Josh,
Could it be a stamp/branding tool?

I was thinking that as well, but there is no evidence of it being struck. It appears to be milled very precisely. Josh
maybe just some scrap left over from some sort of milling operation.
maybe you could use it to hold round things like dowels if you want to drill through them
Looks to be a poorly homemade vee block, chabber.
Google on "vee block" and all will be revealed.

Eddie - Thanks, man. I see now that it would work well in that capacity.Josh
Is it tool steel? Could it be left and right hand thread cutters for metal working, a guess from the paired shapes and relief of the ends.
It's a shop made machinist's "v" block. It was probably an apprentice's training project.

It's a spot marker.
Boys it's so simple! It's the official "X" that marks the spot! You see it was smuggled out of Colorado by Butch Cassidy and the Sun Dance Kid and taken to Bolivia. During the famous shoot out with the Bolivian army it proved to be so distracting to teh Bolivians that Butch and Sun Dance were able to sneak away while the soldiers dug furiously for the treasure that simply had to be beneath it.
After several hours of digging they decided that maybe X really did not mark the spot so they all went to the nearby taco stand to discuss their next move. They finally decided to sell it back to the US and it fell into a private collection only to recently surface in the sale that you attended. So since we all know that "X" really does mark the spot we'll all be over on Friday evening for cold beer and burgers cooked on your grill!
