I think I want to have a go at making my own 6″ belt /10″ stationary sander. I had my heart set on the Delta Model 31-730, but it just seems so expensive for such a relatively simple piece of equipment. Anyone done it themselves or have som good ideas?
Thanks gents

I tried that some years back and was less than impressed with the result. It worked, but just barely, and the cost of parts to make it a good tool would have been exceeded the cost of a manufactured unit. I also built a table saw with an old radial arm saw power head and a bowl lathe as well, both of which served their function but were retired as soon as I was earning enough money with them to do so.
Do it for the challenge or for the fun, but don't expect to match the servicability at lower cost. Mass production does have it's advantages.
Making your own will cost you more even if you have machine shop access. Delta makes a cheaper model as you probably know or go imported or used. The only reason to make one is for the hell of it, not to save money.
