Table Saw Advice – Sears model 35506
Relatively new to wood working and looking to purchase a table saw within some limits: have about $450 max to spend and have limited space. I have just noticed this sears saw (model 35506) on sale for $449. It has a 3/4 cabinet style stand (enclosed motor) which would save space and the trunnions are base mounted (which I have read is a plus).
Some limitations: the extension wings are steel and the fence (which I assume i can upgrade later when i have more $$) has a capcity of 12″ to left and 25″ to right. I know cast iron wings are preferable, but is it all that significant?
Any advice would be appreciated!

I have an old craftsman saw that looked a lot like that one does on top when it was new. I have upgraded the fence system to incra-jig and added two router tables, one on either side to the basic saw and it made a world of difference on what I could cut and how well the saw performed overall. That one looks like a good start for the money, like you said, you can always add to it later on and likely by then there will be a lot of choices out there to pick from. Enjoy!!!!
Hi Bill - That saw is commonly known as the model 22104 also, and is one of three models of hybrid/homeshop cabinet saw that Sears introduced about 2 years ago. They've typically been extremely well received by owners and mags....especially the upper model with the Biesemeyer fence.
Cast iron wings are a nice luxury that you'll find on the 22114 and 22124 at a higher cost, but make no difference to the cutting performance of the saw. The wings and the fence can always be upgraded later, but you may find no there's no need. I've heard of others sliding the rails of the fence to the right to give wider ripping capacity. The stability from the mass of those trunnions, the improved DC, easy alignment, shorter drive belt, and smaller footprint from the internally mounted motor are other benefits of that design.
