I need help selecting a wood for a small table top. The table will abut my range and act as a small countertop. It will provide my children a place to put their hands while watching/assisting me cook. Colors are great. I need to add some to my kitchen.
Any suggestion would be helpful. Thanks
Eric

In a kitchen, you want a hardwood with a closed grain. I like maple, cherry or even ipe. If you use maple, you could dye it pretty much any color of the rainbow.

PS: Since it will be next to your range, it'll get hot & dry in cycles, so expect checking. I'm just sayin' . . . .

Well, for color and stability i would have to say quatersawn Cherry, best natural color over time, and is very stable.
First thought was maple, but not much for natural color. Then someone said quartersawn and I said ya know, just Friday I got to work with some quartered hickory. Man was that neat looking stuff. Lots of contrast, definately hard. Might have a look and see if you like that particular color contrast.
Real trucks dont have sparkplugs
Pecan! which is one of the Hickories. Go off the beaten path with wood selection and use a lesser-known one, and also use a wood which relates to a food product.
If it's next to your range, why not make a butcher-block top? Then you can use it to prep your food as well.
How about zebra wood or spalted something nice natural colors and with the right finish really cool looking stuff!
Make your own mistakes not someone elses, this is a good way to be original !
Granite. Make the base out of wood but the top should be something hard that won't hold food particles ( and mold and salmonella and e.coli etc.) I did exactly what you're talking about, making a Stickley style base and purchased a piece of granite to put on top. Works great.
Hopes this helps,
Sean
Check out http://www.glumber.com/ and see what they say about bacteria and etc. It's very interesting and they have amazing counters. I know you will do it your self it's worth going to. They say plastic cutting boards can keep bacteria alive longer than wood, read it and find out why.

stop by my garbage can before they come tomorrow and select whatever wood you want.. There is more than enough to make some table tops.. white oak black walnut maple cherry etc..
any piece under 4 feet long has gone in there..

You can land that personal jet right near by and I'll send a limo to pick you up plus you get to then select from my personal stash. Including those great big long 19 footers (assuming you bring your Gulfstream 4 and not that whimpy little lear).<grin>
ps Dang, see how hard it is to give away wood?

frenchy,
If you happen to see an Atlas Van Lines truck driven by a couple of greasy men drive into your dooryard, for Gawds sake and yours, don't give 'em any grief! They're real nasty.
Will be coming to get some wood for me. Check's in the mail!
:-)

Bob,
Only works if you arrive by your own Gulf stream lV. (see I told you you shoulda 'upgraded last year! That little Lear jus' don' command the respect it used to!)
