I’ve got a friend that wants to refinish his guitar. I’m wondering what’s the best way to strip off the polyurethane finish that’s on there now? Thanks for any help.

Creekwood,
I won't dare answer your question because I'll probably be wrong.
Check out Frank Ford's site, he's a master! with a ton of information online.

Oh, if its an old/vintage guitar, seek an expert, they usally go down in value if refinished.
Enjoy, Roy
Thanks, Roy. It's not an old one, just one he had and wants to change to another look. I'll check out that site.
It's very rare to see polyurethane on a guitar, unless it's a homemade one; usually it's lacquer. That website is great, BTW. For materials, check out http://www.stewmac.com. Why is he refinishing?
Kell
Kell, I was also surprised to hear it was polyurethane. But he said the info he had stated that was what it was. He's just looking for a new look, something like painting it and airbrushing stripes in it. I think he has the look in his head of what he wants.
Thanks for the help.
I would be surprised if it was plain polyurethane. But I would post he question on the Musical Instrument Makers Forum at http://www.mimf.org and you would get a better answer.
Thanks, stantheman. I'll check that site out, also.
