Reciently I constructed a built in bookcase, I used ribbon Sapele sheet goods. It turns out that one sheet has this offensive odor. I removed the unit to my shop and allowed it to air, then applied additional coats of shellac to all. The odor remains. Any suggestions as to cause or solution?

Sapele should not stink at all, It should smell a little like Cedar. I would suspect the Glue to be the culprit. Where was the ply made ? I suspect it is out gassing a little formaldehyde, that stinks.
Work Safe, Count to 10 when your done for the day !!

Hey Bruce,
That sounds right come to think of it. The other three sheets had only the sapele odor, like cedar. Any idea how long this out-gassing might go on?
Could take just weeks or even months, but it will go away. Just give it lots of ventilation.Work Safe, Count to 10 when your done for the day !!
