I am building a stickey bookcase, number 716 to be exact. My question for the masses is this: Does anyone know why there is a 3/8″ slat between the door style and the side panel of the bookcase? I have looked at photos of this bookcase on auction sites and the slat is there, but I have no idea why.
Thanks
Jeff

This is just a guess, I'm not a Stickley expert.
If I'm seeing the picture correctly, it looks like the dooes are set back from the front face the side panels.
My surmization is that the slat moves the hinges in from the sides so the doors can open more than 90 degrees.
Yes, it's a hinge strip that allows the doors to be inset from the front of the case sides. By the way, it also makes it much easier to cut the hinge mortises, because you don't have to mortise into the case side.
