Hey all,
has any one got or has anyone experience with a Startrite 351 band saw. I currently looking at buying one and I would welcome any comments

I live in the UK and plan to purchase a used bandsaw I like you have found it difficult to find information to help in deciding which bandsaw to purchase
In the United Kingdom i have identified two companies that sell used professional bandsaws
Daltons,and Conways
Website Conwaysaw,Daltonsmaschines
You could email the companies and ask for their views on the machines

Thanks for that. While I was initially asking about the quality of the startrite saw those sites were useful. I had already contacted Conwats but Daltons were new to me and their stock is 'interesting' and tempting.
Whats your opinion on 'Record Power' saws. They seem to be a cheaper version of the Startrite but still from the same stable. For the price of a good, second hand. 12inch Startrite one could get a new 15/16inch Record bandsaw. Or so it would appear. Would I be buying a pup though?

I am in the process of deciding which bandsaw to purchase a process I am finding daunting .The reason my lack of knowledge. You could try the following sites for used bandsaws Mashines4wood and Felder has a used machinery section
I have no knowledge of the Record bandsaws but they do not seem to feature on Website selling used professional mashinary
Further I believe they did have two qualities of products Far east products (painted Blue) and other products painted green(these too may not be Uk built but EU.)
Startrite machines were built in the UK but I think they are now built in Italy
You can find Startrite band saws on the Record power web site(or telephone record to ask qustions about the 351 you are considering)
At present I am thinking about the Scchepack5-2 basato
Prices on the Internet 1500 to 1700 but there is an offer on diytools.com at 1300 pounds
NB. You do need to establish what is included in the price, you appear to get the fence with all internet suppliers but some pictures show the mitre fence as well but do not make it clear if it is included in the price
The cost of delivery could be another factor Suggest if you decide on a new product consider finding the lowest price then asking local supplier to price match this may save on delivery
Used machines do seem expensive my understanding is the original purchaser if a company can write 40% off against tax in the first year then the remainder over the next two years. Therefore machines that appear to be a number of years old seem expensive
Other old British proffesional band saws may be a good purchase but you would need to establish what condition they were in, my conearn having read a little is the state of the rubber on the cast iron wheels is a key area David Charlesworth has a Robison Cadet which I think is 27 years old see his website

Charnwood, thanks for the reply. I've done a lot of checking online and there appears to be a great offer on the Record BS500 which is bigger than I had intended (450mm throat I think) and might suit you. I've seen it for less that £700 +VAT online which means I can ship it to Ireland for less than €1000. I've seen the same machine on sale here for €1200 second hand. It really pays to shop around. You might consider this bandsaw as it appears to get pretty fair reviews. I'm pretty sure I'll take the plunge. Must pop into town next week to see one in the flesh first before I do anything for sure.Eoin
There is a woodwork show at Yandles in early April see their Website for details
The show lists Record ,Startrite and Scheppach all as companies attending Further see Yandles web site for the range of bandsaws they stock or perhaps give them a call

Eoin,
I'm not familiar with purchasing tools in Ireland but I just Googled Startrite band saw and found some bandsaws on Ebay.ie in Ireland. Might want to check there.

A Woodworkers mind should be the sharpest tool in the shop!
If my information is correct Startrite band saws are Italian, and also make a line for Laguna!
From what I hear they make excellent commercial bandsaws!
This is from one of my suppliers in TelAviv. They seem like a good choice as I was also considering a purchase but allas I didn't upgrade to three faze power so that was that!
