I have a question in regards to what type of Rosewood Stanley used in making their totes and knobs for their planes. I’m not an expert on exotic woods, but I do realize their are several different species in the rosewood family. I’d like to turn a few replacement knobs and I’m curious if the same rosewood is still available and what it specifically is, or what current species available would be the best match to what Stanley originally used. Thanks in advance.

In general, Brazilian rosewood was used by most tool manufacturers in the 19th and early 20th century. Occasionally, you'll find other species such as cocobolo and even American walnut, but those are isolated examples.
Brazilian rosewood's export from its home country has been banned for a number of years, and what supplies still exist in the US are scarce and very expensive. A perfectly serviceable knob that closely matches the original in color can be turned from cocobolo, or a number of other rosewood species. If absolute authenticity is desired, there are a number of antique tool dealers that sell genuine Stanley replacement knobs and totes.
Thank you for your reply. Brazilian Rosewood was what I thought it was. I have purchased a few old replacements, but the nice ones get pretty spendy. I plan to make a few replacement knobs for starters, and maybe try a few totes. Cocobolo was going to be my first choice as it turns like butter on the lathe. Thanks again for the reply.
Cocobolo is like the first girl you ever kissed.. You may not remember her name but always remember HER!
Yeah, some of us got a rash <g>
