I am an experienced finish carpenter who’s decided to try spraying a couple of my cabinets instead of using a brush. I have two compressors One 3/4 horse, one 1 1/2 horse that I’d like to use. Will they work? I was thinking of buying a 60.00 spray gun from Lowe’s as I will be spraying only on a rare ocassion. Can I make it happen? I was a body man once and have sprayed cars, but of course the dealership had a huge compressor and Binks guns. Can I get by on my equipment? How large a booth would I need. It must be portable as I’m limited to a 20×20 garage. A couple of plastic walls and a window kind of thing. Any advise? Thanks JW

JW-The $60 gun may put an OK finish but if you invest a little more for a inexpensive HVLP gun you could probably do away with the spray booth and save yourself and your neighbors from massive quantities of overspray and fumes and save money since your product transfer will be much greater.
I have purchase a HVLP gun from Harbor Freight($89 on sale)(http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/taf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=7902) and it works quite well for the cabinets I've made. My compressor, a used Craftsman 7.5cfm@40psi, is a little overworked, since you need more volume instead of pressure, but it's handled so far. I've used ML Cambell Klearplast and Magnalac. I like the latter best.
*Thanks Steve,After more research, I decided to go with the HVLP system. The problem I'm having is that I'm doing too many cabinets lately to finish by hand. I should have looked into spraying years ago, but I was building houses. Now that I'm semi-retired ( thats about as far as carpenters can get) I'm building smaller stuff. How do like the waterborn varnishes? What dangers await me If I decide to use them? Thanks again JW
*For two cabinets I'd use a can of Jet Spray lacquer; it works great in a pinch. In fact, it works remarkably well.
*I built a guitar once and can sprayed it with lacquer, it did turn out nice. I found a hvlp spray gun for sale by the brand name of Power Craft made in Taiwan, anyone familiar with it?
